The real winners of AI are often behind the scenes

On June 21, an article appeared in HLN an article about several Belgian asset managers who have been among the country’s top performers in recent years. Our Econopolis Exponential Technologies Fund, managed by Siddy Jobe, was one of them. Below, Siddy shares the thinking behind that approach.

The bottom line is simple: we distinguish between hype and a megatrend. Not every trend changes the world, but a megatrend does. That’s why we look not only at the most visible winners in artificial intelligence, but especially at the companies that are driving the trend.

The image that best captures this is that of a gold rush. It’s not just the gold prospectors who make money, but especially those who sell the pickaxes and sieves. In the AI rush, those are the suppliers of chips, memory, and infrastructure. The fund is therefore not a broad technology tracker, but a portfolio of about forty carefully selected companies in fields such as chips, memory, cloud computing, cybersecurity, digital payments, robotics, and self-driving technology.

Our guiding principle is this: invest in technology that has already proven itself, not in mere promises. We look at profits, cash flow, and sound financials, and we think in terms of years, not weeks.

At the same time, we remain realistic. Exceptional returns are not a promise that can be assumed to hold true every year. But the underlying themes—from AI and data centers to chips, cybersecurity, and robotics—are not just a passing fad.
